With a long history dating back to around 3000 BC, it began to develop significantly as a commercial center in the 8th century BC. Due to its strategic location and ability to control the isthmus, it held significant commercial and strategic importance in ancient times. In ancient Greece, it was a trading center with a navy fleet and participated in multiple Greek wars. Despite the ruins of the ancient city, there still stands an impressive temple dedicated to Apollo.
